Sometimes the best way to move forward is to step back.
HAWTHORNE, California, July 31, 2008 - Lithographix, one of the world’s premier printing
and visual communications companies, prides itself on what might be the industry’s most
modern, diverse collection of printing and imaging technologies to meet a wide variety of
customer requirements. But it recently filled a gap in its large-format offerings by adding the
venerable Durst Lambda Laser Imager – a state-of-the-art, 50-inch digital photo platform first
introduced more than a dozen years ago, yet as timely as tomorrow.

The goal: Compete for new retail and point-of-purchase business by providing the highestquality
images demanded by top-shelf, brand-conscious retailers. Lithographix is convinced
that, while newer imaging processes such as direct-to-media have helped display imaging
explode into many new areas, there is no substitute for the quality of a photograph.
“After all this time, you still cannot beat the quality of a Lambda,” says Scott Kurosaki,
Lithographix’s Director of Retail Sales. “A lot of the big retailers know the Lambda by name,
and the demand is still present. We intend to use our Lambdas to expand our capabilities and
reach within the retail environment and can now target their 500-store graphic campaigns as
well.”
In 1995, Durst introduced what is arguably the only piece of professional photo equipment to
approach legend status – the Lambda Digital Laser Imager. Since then it has only gotten
better. Durst, over the past decade, has continued to make regular upgrades to the standard
Lambda platform. From color matching to workflow to the user interface to speed and
productivity, Lambda improvements have kept the imager – now the Lambda 130 HS (High
Speed) – as relevant as the day it was introduced.
As of April 1, Lithographix had installed one Lambda HS,
with a second on order. Kurosaki notes that they are
being set up with two laminators and two cutters in a
high-productivity configuration. “We expect to keep
them running for all three shifts,” he says. As
Lithographix President Herb Zebrack says, “We continue
to grow and change with the times while upholding our
traditions and values. We try to exceed our clients’
needs in every way. We’ve settled nicely into our new
250,000 square foot facility, and now almost everything
a client would need is under one roof.”
The Lambda 130 HS features a 5-position media turret for easy and immediate access to the
widest variety of unexposed media – paper, backlit, clear film and flex media – in rolls from
20” up to 50” wide. Users enjoy versatility in media selection to fulfill a range of applications
efficiently. The resolution of Lambda images is equivalent to 4,000 dpi, thanks to Durst’s
patented single-beam, 3-laser exposure system that utilizes a 36-bit RGB color space (68
billion colors).
“I can’t think of another piece of image output equipment that over time has had the impact
on this industry that the Lambda printer has had,” says Christopher Howard, Senior Vice
President of Sales & Marketing for Durst’s U.S. operations. “We’re aware of retailers and
creatives who actually ‘spec’ Lambda prints. They’ve become almost a brand, like Kleenex
tissues and Xerox copies. The Lambda is an excellent example of the quality and capabilities
Durst builds into all of our equipment to help our customers’ expand their businesses and
protect their capital investment.”
Major retailers, Kurosaki points out, invest heavily in developing, nurturing and protecting
their brands. “Their brand is their touch point to the marketplace,” he says. “The images in
their campaigns have to be sharp, and they have to be accurate. A lot of people say photo
has gone away – but it’s still very much in demand, especially by the more brand-conscious
enterprises.” Kurosaki says Lithographix’s Lambdas will make the company more competitive in the retail /tradeshow/event segments, while offering a high-quality complement to the
company’s direct-to-board and grand-format capabilities.
