Toronto’s SCL Imaging Group Is First in North America to Install New Durst Rho 351R Roll Printer

Acquisition Lets Company Pursue ‘Green’ Operating Model and Enhance Productivity

TORONTO, Ontario, July 30, 2007 – SCL Imaging Group, one of Canada’s leading digital large-format printers, is the first company in North America to install the new superwide Durst Rho 351R Roll-to-Roll UV Inkjet Printer as it aggressively pursues a “green” business strategy that emphasizes environmental responsibility throughout its operations, SCL Imaging Group and Durst Image Technology U.S., LLC announced today.

The new, 11.5-foot-wide Rho 351R, which can feed two 63-inch rolls of media at the same time for unparalleled flexibility and productivity, uses VOC-free inks, and prints on both recycled and recyclable roll materials, according to Durst.  It was introduced in June at the FESPA trade show in Berlin.

Peter Spring, SCL Imaging Group’s Vice President and General Manager, said the capabilities of the Rho 351R permit the Toronto company to make good on its environmental commitment, add superwide roll products to its client offerings, and continue to benefit from the workflow and output productivity that Durst printers are known for.  SCL Imaging also owns a Durst Rho 600 Rapid Flatbed Large-Format UV Inkjet Printer and two Durst Lambda wide-format digital photo imagers to provide a full range of imaging services, including finishing and distribution, the company said.

“This acquisition was a business decision that has a lot of advantages for us, for our customers and for the environment,” Spring said.  “The Rho 351R allows us to get into a new market – wide-format roll media – and diversify our offerings, and to do it in an environmentally responsible way.  Our clients are looking for variety and we were looking for a productivity opportunity.  In addition, we know eventually that solvent inks will have to go away.  So we think we’ve made a smart long-term decision that makes SCL Imaging Group a better company to do business with.”

SCL Imaging Group was founded in 1982 and acquired by President Dominic Rubino and partner Tim Wood in 1999.  It enjoys a reputation as a pioneer in color management, and a company that invests in the latest and most innovative imaging technologies.  Many of Canada’s largest enterprises in retail, sports and entertainment, exhibits & display, advertising, finance, public transportation and government turn to SCL Imaging Group for their large-format printing needs.

“Now, these companies can turn to us to meet more of their image requirements while knowing that the impact on the environment is being minimized thanks to our printing equipment and processes,” Spring said.

According to Durst, the Rho 351R delivers high image quality, superior workflow and the ability to meet robust environmental standards.  Not only does the 351R print on recycled and recyclable roll materials – a requirement that’s showing up on more client checklists – but Durst inks are VOC-free, according to the stringent European Council Directive 1999/13/EC.  Many UV inks contain a “solvent carrier” used as a viscosity agent.  But Durst inks employ different, environmentally friendly ingredients, Durst said.

The Rho 351R, able to print up to 1,830 sf/hr on selected roll media, can also simultaneously print on two 63-inch-wide rolls of different material and different diameters – better utilizing the width of its 11.5-foot-wide print bed.  Productivity is enhanced further by the “stepless” skip-white function in the XY direction.  The printing operation is enhanced by an integrated manual cutting device and user-friendly, industry-standard LINUX operating software. A built-in security system allows for unattended printing of large rolls, and double-sided printing is possible with precise laser-driven registration, Durst said.

The Rho 351R, a variation of the popular Rho 350R, is a superwide, high-speed UV inkjet printer that lays down quality images at true 600 dpi on paper, fabric, vinyl, PVC films and many other types of roll media.  Exceptional print quality (text is sharp down to 4-point type and solid areas exhibit high color gamut and density) is achieved through Durst’s Quadro™ Array print head technology, some innovative European mechanical engineering, and proprietary Durst image software, the company said.

“It’s a real pleasure to see SCL Imaging Group take full advantage of the capabilities of our new Rho 351R, in order to move their business in new directions and pursue an effective “green” working model that’s becoming both a key requirement for many clients and an acceptable response to potential government regulation on this side of the Atlantic,” said Christopher Howard, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Durst U.S.
